Sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem like everyday complaints. Here are 10 warning signs to watch for.
1. Loud, Chronic Snoring
Snoring is the most common symptom of OSA, though not everyone who snores has sleep apnea.
2. Witnessed Breathing Pauses
If your bed partner has noticed you stop breathing during sleep, this is a strong indicator.
3. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
Feeling tired despite getting 7-8 hours of sleep is a hallmark of disrupted sleep quality.
4. Morning Headaches
Waking up with headaches can result from drops in blood oxygen during the night.
5. Waking Up Gasping or Choking
Sudden awakenings with a sensation of choking or gasping for air.
6. Difficulty Concentrating
Sleep apnea fragments your sleep, impairing cognitive function and memory.
7. Mood Changes
Irritability, depression, and anxiety can all be linked to chronic sleep disruption.
8. Frequent Nighttime Urination
Getting up to use the bathroom multiple times per night may be caused by sleep apnea.
9. Dry Mouth or Sore Throat
Waking with a dry mouth often indicates mouth breathing during sleep.
10. High Blood Pressure
